Care Home for Children
with Learning Disabilities
For the last project in my university student life, I chose Healthcare Industry as my final work.
This is a care home for children with learning disabilities. As there might be difficulties for their families when taking care of the children, especially with challenging behaviours, care home would be the place for the children to stay.
In the UK, most of the existing care homes are on a small scale that could only accommodate 5-8 people, it is nice to have a small community. However, there are children waiting for a care home for a long time. Hestia's Arms could take in 18 people maximum and hopefully ease the situation.
On the ground floor, there are mainly communal area, office area and some essential rooms. For both first and second floor, there would be residential area with 18 rooms in total, activity rooms, therapy rooms, communal area and a small office area.
A lounge placed in the middle of the building and allow sunlight and skyview. Since it was originally an industrial building, windows were not sufficient. Open up the roof and cut out the floor to let sunlight pour in the interior.
I remember when I was back in Hong Kong, I visited some care homes and hospitals occasionally. Most of them are performing as a normal facility without any design, it seems like the owner only cares about how many people could fit in the facility and make money from them. I do feel sorry for the patients and residents that they have to live in a small space.
Therefore, the bedrooms with bathrooms are big enough as a studio, and separated into two levels. There would be enough space even the families or visitors of the residents want to stay overnight.
An office is availble on ground floor. It was split by the plant holder and floor finishing to create a working area and a little conference area.
Other than lounge on ground floor, small lounges are also available on first and second floor as an easy access for residents who live on that floor.
